The Masters Golf 2021 - Punters Guide

The Masters is upon us once again, and punters all over the globe will be placing wagers on the prestigious tournament held in Augusta, Georgia, United States.  If you are new to betting on golf online or are unfamiliar with a few of the betting terms throughout this article, we have a fantastic beginners guide to golf betting to help you.

Augusta, Georgia

The Masters is held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It is the first major golf tournament of the season and is one of the four major championships held each season.  The uniqueness of this tournament is that it is held at the same golf club every year. The other three majors are held at different courses each year, which makes The Masters very special.

The Masters was first played at Augusta National in 1934, and there are a number of traditions held each year. The tournament is preceded by a Drive, Chip and Putt competition to help promote golf within the younger community and also a Par-3 contest for the participants of the upcoming Masters. As well there is the Champions Dinner for all the players the night before the first round.  The most well-known tradition is the presentation of the green jacket to the winner of the tournament. This is unlike any other golfing competition and provides a level of distinction and prestige if you are lucky enough to win it.

Winning the tournament also gives the golfer a number of privileges, including an invitation to play at the other three major tournaments for the next five years, lifetime invitation to play at The Masters and an automatic membership to the PGA Tour for the next five seasons.

Popular Betting Types

Golf betting online is extremely popular, and sportsbooks have begun to increase the number of markets available to punters for every tournament during the season.  A number of the most popular markets that you should look at when placing wagers on the upcoming Masters includes

  • Tournament Winner – a market favoured by the majority of bettors. Who will win the tournament outright? This market is extremely profitable because of the large odds, but it also the hardest to predict.
  • Top 5 / 10 / 20 – if you are looking for a bit more security with your wagers, then placing a bet on a golfer finishing in the top 5 / 10 / 20 is the way to go. The odds are reduced significantly when backing someone to finish in the top 20, but your pick has a much greater probability of success, compared to backing them outright.
  • Match-ups – another popular market is match-up betting. You are able to play this market on each day of the tournament and for the overall tournament. Your sportsbook will offer a match-up of two golfers and you decide on which one will record the lowest score.
  • Top Nationality – value can be found within this betting market, and it is primarily used for that reason. You choose which golfer will record the lowest score compared to others from the same nation.

Canadians in Contention

Out of the 88 golfers competing in the upcoming Masters, the total number of players representing Canada are 3. These include:

  1. Corey Conners – currently number 25 on the FedEx Cup rankings, Corey is looking to prove he is in contention for the 2021 Masters. He is currently priced at +7000 on William Hill to win it outright.
  2. Mackenzie Hughes – his current FedEx Cup ranking is number 59 and is way down in the field according to William Hill, who are pricing him at +20000 to win The Masters.
  3. Mike Weir – he is one of the previous winners at The Masters, earning his green jacket back in 2003. Therefore, he received the invitation to this year’s Masters. He is currently listed at +100000 to win again.

Favourites & Dark Horses

Current analysis of the field competing in the upcoming Masters has provided a number of favourites and a few potential dark horses.

The Favourites

  • Jordan Spieth – currently priced at a respectable +1100.
  • Justin Thomas – current price +1100.
  • Jon Rahm – priced at +1200.
  • Dustin Johnson – the current bookies favourite at +900.

The dark horses

  • Paul Casey – a little further down the order at +3300.
  • Sergio Garcia – current odds of +4500.
  • Dylan Frittelli – much higher odds compared to the rest mentioned above, Dylan is currently priced up at +12500.

All prices are from William Hill and the large odds offered are due to the number of excellent golfers competing in the tournament and the difficulty each one will face when trying to win it outright.

The Punters Pick

With the Augusta National Golf Club being one of the hardest courses on the PGA Tour, we are looking at who has the experience and has proved themselves on other challenging courses throughout their career.  With 3 top 10 finishes in the last 3 Masters tournaments, we think that Jon Rahm has what it takes to step up and take the green jacket at the 2021 Masters.
